NEWW-Polska was founded in 1999 as an independent association. In June 2004 it became the International Secretariat of The Network of East-West Women. The association has the status of an organization working for the public benefit.
NEWW-Polska:
  • runs the International Secretariat of the Network of East-West Women NEWW
  • runs NEWW website (regional portal) and two listserves
  • coordinates international and regional projects, organizes meetings and conferences supporting women's participation in social and political life
  • organizes training sessions for women
  • organizes training sessions for women
  • provides free legal and psychological counseling
  • publishes information on women's health, women in business, and violence towards women
  • runs a library, reading room and a computer station with free access to the internet.

Małgorzata Tarasiewicz - Director

She has been the director of the Association for Women's Cooperation, NEWW-Polska since January 2000. In the 1980s she was a member of the "Wolność i Pokój" (Freedom and Peace) movement. From 1989 to 1991 she was a coordinator of the Women's Section of Solidarity, and from 1991-1995 the President of Amnesty International Poland. She was the coordinator of the New York office of the Network of East-West Women between 1996 and 1997. On returning to Poland, she coordinated the Amnesty International project for founding the International Criminal Court from 1997 to 1999. Since 2003 she has been a member of the National Council of the Green Party "Zieloni 2004".

Joanna Puzewicz-Barska - Office Coordinator

Pracuje w NEWW-Polska od 2001 roku. Jedna z koordynatorek wydania polskiej adaptacji książki "Nasze ciała, nasze życie", poświęconej zdrowiu kobiet. Obecnie odpowiedzialna także za sprawy administracyjne organizacji.

Zofia Łapniewska (Zofka) - Researcher, Editor of the NEWW information bulletin, Project Coordinator

She has been involved in the activities of NEWW-Polska since the beginning of 2001. She is one of the coordinatiors of the Polish adaptation of the book "Our Bodies, Ourselves" devoted to women's health. At the moment she is responsible for the administration of the organization.

Katarzyna Kurkiewicz - a lawyer specializing in legal counselling for women who have been victims of discrimination, sexual abuse, or domestic violence

Mediation Training course. She is a member of a group supporting the introduction of mediation in Poland, a member of NEWW-Polska, and is currently working for the Teacher Training Center in Gdańsk. From 1997 to 1998 she worked as a legal advisor for non-governmental organizations such as The Women's Rights Center, Caritas, and Amnesty International. In 1999 she was a co-founder of The Baltic 'Gender' Center. She cooperates with the Civil Counseling Office. For six years she has been giving free counselling to women who have suffered discrimination, violence or sexual abuse.

Anna Jarząbek - She gives counselling to women who have been victims of violence, as well as wives of alcoholics.

She graduated from She graduated from Psychology Department at Gdańsk University. She practiced and at the Prevention of Domestic Violence Centre, and spent her placement working for the The Regional Centre for the Treatment of Alcohol Addiction and Co-Addiction in Gdańsk. She has worked as a counsellor for NEWWW-Polska since May 2004.

Monika Sarnowska

In 1982 she emigrated with her parents to South Africa, where she passed her high school matric exams two years later. In 1991 she obtained her BA degree in European languages and History of Art at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg. Since 1993 she has been working as a translator in Durban.In 1997 she obtained a diploma in Early Childhood Education (Montessori) and worked as a Montessori teacher in Durban, later also ran her own Montessori school. In the years 1999 – 2000 she lived in London where she worked in a Montessori school. She also worked as a translator for the Wandsworth Interpreting Services (part of the local council authority). At that time she also did some interpreting and translating work for The Gdansk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). In 2001 she returned to South Africa. She is a mother of two daughters (ages 4 and 7 years).She continues working as a translator. In 2007she became a member of The South African Institute of Translators (SATI). Since 2006 she is a volunteer at NEWW-Poland.
The Board of Directors of NEWW-Polska:
Ewa Graczyk - a lecturer in Polish Literature Department at Gdańsk University, she specializes in contemporary literature. She was the founder of the gender discussion group at the University of Gdańsk. As a feminist, she is interested in studying the philosophy of feminism, as well as taking an active part in supporting women. Her book, 'Przed użyciem wstrząsnąć' ("Shake Well Before Use"), in which she uses gender and feminist ideas to interpret the works of Witold Gombrowicz is due to be published in Autumn 2004.
Bożena Kusina, President of the Board She is a graduate of the Polish Philology Department at the University of Gdańsk. She is the Board Member of The Foundation for Women's Cooperation, The Pomeranian Women's Forum, and a former director of the Agency for the Women's Professional Promotion in Gdańsk. She has also been the coordinator for the following projects: Phare -ACCESS 2000, PAUCI programmes - The Polish-American-Ukrainian Cooperation Initiative.
Lucyna Orłowska - She was the founder of the Democratic Union of Women in 1989. Now she is the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of the Democratic Union of Women and the chairperson of its Gdańsk branch. She is a women's rights activist and an advocate of male/female equality. She is mainly interested in the issues of unemployment, domestic violence and mobbing among women. She is the headmistress of a private educational institution running training courses for unemployed women. She is a writer of training manuals.
